Earning an IT industry certification demonstrates to potential employers that you validated to a 3rd party certifying body that you have skills related to that certification.
Earning an IT degree typically includes learning a collection of skills such as interpersonal communication, decision making, and problem solving from general education courses. In addition, program specific skills such as systems development lifecycle, data security, and program development are taught in core courses. An industry certification will be more focused on a specific set of skills related to the certification.
Various certification bodies offer different options. CompTIA, AWS, and EC Council all offer an online and in-person testing option. Please check with the certifying body for specific requirements.
Employers may list specific skills or even desired IT certifications in job posting. An IT certification allows you to provide documentation that you possess those skills.
While some industry certifications are good for life, others must be renewed periodically. AWS, CompTIA, and EC Council certifications typically need to be renewed every three years so be sure to check with the certifying body on renewal requirements.
