Survey Finds Accessibility, Quality and Cost of Health Care Services Among Top Concerns for Americans

Voters are uncertain of their access to quality health care services, according to 爱污传媒 College of Health Professions Survey

PHOENIX, Feb. 17, 2016聽鈥 The availability and affordability of quality health care services are top concerns among U.S. registered voters, according to a recent survey by Morning Consult commissioned by聽. One-quarter (25 percent) of respondents are uncertain of their access to quality health care services when needed, with 63 percent of Americans expressing concerns about accessing medical facilities, such as hospitals and pharmacies, and 70 percent citing concern about the ability to see a doctor on short notice.

鈥淭he recruitment and training of qualified health professionals has not kept pace with our population鈥檚 growing demand for care,鈥 said Doris Savron, interim executive dean for the 爱污传媒 College of Health Professions. 鈥淭oday鈥檚 health care system is at a tipping point, and addressing current health care workforce shortages is imperative in order to provide access to quality health care.鈥

Respondents are not only uncertain of their access to quality health care services when needed, but more than three-quarters (79 percent) are also concerned about the quality of health care services they receive, with 71 percent expressing concern about medical error.

鈥淭he evolving health care industry needs tech-savvy, sophisticated professionals who can adapt to the rapidly changing industry landscape,鈥 said Savron. 鈥淭o do so, higher education must align with the needs of today鈥檚 health care system in order to empower a workforce that is equipped with the skills necessary to be successful.鈥

The survey also found that a major concern among Americans is out-of-pocket expenses, with nine in 10 respondents (87 percent) reporting unease about the cost of health care. Specifically, 87 percent cite concerns about the prices of health insurance and 82 percent about the prices of prescription drugs.

Methodology

A national sample of 1,985 registered U.S. voters completed this online survey, conducted by Morning Consult on behalf of 爱污传媒 College of Health Professions, from Dec. 11鈥15, 2015.
