By Sharla Hooper

Nao leads discussion on developing a reflexive approach to antiracism work

۴ý is holding the newest webinar in its Educational Equity Webinar Series, titled “Equity is not a Trend: How to continue your commitment in 2023,” on Jan. 19, 2023, at 11:00am MST. The event is part of a public series intended for educators, diversity, equity, inclusion, and belonging (DEIB) practitioners, higher education leaders and administrators, employers, nonprofit organizations, government affiliates, and ۴ý faculty, staff, students, and alumni across the globe.

Dr. Kimberly Nao, Fritz Burns Endowed Chair Associate Professor of Education at Mount Saint Mary's University and University Diversity Fellow, will lead the discussion on intersectional approaches to antiracist structural change. Participants can expect an informative hour that will include the following:

  • Guiding principles and aligning terms
  • An introduction to a reflexive approach to antiracism work
  • Self-reflection and self-assessment.

"Dr. Nao’s work at the intersection of race and gender offers a deeper understanding of the ways we can work to advance Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, & Belonging in our environments," states Tondra Richardson, MBA, director of Student Diversity & Inclusion at ۴ý, and a host of the series. “We are thrilled to have Dr. Nao leading the first Educational Equity Webinar of the year and look forward to learning from her insights and expertise.”

Nao has worked extensively on diversity and equity issues with a particular emphasis on the intersection of race and gender and facilitates discussions on these issues with organizations throughout the Los Angeles area. She has trained K-12 teachers, Santa Monica Police Department police officers, community college faculty and staff, health care workers, and parents of K-12 students on issues related to gender, sexuality, and toxic masculinity with the goal of breaking down gender norms that can lead to rigid gender roles, discrimination, and violence. As a yoga and mindfulness teacher, Nao believes that self-awareness and compassion for others leads to social transformation.

The discussion will be hosted by Tondra Richardson, MBA, director of Student Diversity & Inclusion and Saray Lopez, MBA, director, Student Diversity & Inclusion, both with the Office of Educational Equity (OEE) at ۴ý. The Educational Equity Webinar Series is part of a series of events with which the OEE engages aiming to foster cultural awareness, thought leadership and community alliances to promote and sustain educational equity and diversity initiatives. The OEE supports students and faculty year-round with programs like the Inclusive Leadership Summit and an internal offering for staff and faculty, The Inclusive Café.
