State licensure requirements

The University’s Bachelor of Science in Social Work (BSSW) program meets the requirements for licensure or certification requirements in the states listed below. Review the social work licensure requirements listed under your state.

As a social work candidate in Alabama, you must complete the following requirements to apply for the Licensed Bachelor Social Worker (LBSW) after graduating from the ۴ý Bachelor of Science in Social Work program.

Clearances:

During the application process, candidatesmustdisclose criminal conviction history as part of their application. Candidates with a criminal conviction history may be denied licensure.

Exam:

Bachelor's candidates must pass thebaccalaureate exam. The ASWB Bachelor’s Exam can be completed with authorization from the Alabama board. Authorization is given following completion of all other application requirements. If an applicant has completed the Bachelor’s exam in another jurisdiction, they should simply request that verification of a passing score be sent to this Board, either from ASWB, or from the state Board which originally authorized the exam.

Each applicant seeking to become licensed must meet and/or complete the requirements for the Licensed Bachelor Social Worker as defined by the State of Alabama.Please review and complete thefor the State of Alabama.

Additional Post-Graduate Supervision Requirements:

A minimum of 4 hours per month supervision is required for 24 months, to total 96 hours of supervision. This supervision must be completed with a 36-month period beginning with employment for Bachelor level licensees. Supervision must be provided by a LMSW or LICSW. After 24 or more months (96 hours) of supervision, an LBSW may engage in the practice of social work without further licensing supervision as long as the social worker remains in the same type of social work practice.

A contract must be negotiated between the supervisor and the supervisee and is subject to the approval of the Board.

If supervision is terminated by either party, the supervisor is responsible for completing the evaluation and termination forms within 30 days and forwarding the documents to the Board for review. The supervisor shall certify the total number of supervised hours at termination.

Clearances:

Candidates must submit a full set of fingerprints and proof of online payment for a criminal history background check through the unless candidates can provide that they hold a current, valid DPS fingerprint clearance card.

Exam:

Bachelor's candidates must pass the baccalaureate exam. The ASWB Bachelor’s Exam can be completed with the authorization from the Arizona board. Authorization is given following completion of all other application requirements. If an applicant has completed the Bachelor’s exam in another jurisdiction, they should request that verification of a passing score be sent to this Board from ASWB. Candidates must receive a passing score on the approved ASWB exam within 12 months after receiving written examination authorization from the Board. An applicant shall not take an approved licensure examination more than three times during the 12-month testing period.

Clearances:

All applicants for social work licensure must apply for a criminal background check and the results must be received by the Arkansas Social Work Licensing Board prior to being issued a provisional license, license through endorsement, or approval to take the exam. A current and valid application for licensure must be on file prior to criminal background checks being processed. Instructions will be sent for the background process once the application and fee have been received by the Board.

After an application is approved, the applicant will be mailed a letter of eligibility with a link to the website for the candidate handbook and instructions for registering for the exam. Authorization is given following completion of all other application requirements. If an applicant has completed the Bachelor’s exam in another jurisdiction, they should request that verification of a passing score be sent to this Board from ASWB. Candidates must receive a passing score on the approved ASWB exam within two years after receiving written examination authorization from the Board. An applicant who does not pass the exam within two years must re-apply.

Applicants must disclose any complaints, charges of unlicensed activity, or pending disciplinary actions for any profession, occupation, or license, both motor vehicle and those other than motor vehicle on their application along with a signed, detailed statement and related court/agency documentation. If the application indicates criminal conviction, they must also submit a current criminal history record check from the dated within six months. Post-Graduation Supervision Requirements:

Persons applying as a Licensed Social Worker who have a baccalaureate degree in social work shall complete 3 years of supervised professional experience subsequent to obtaining the baccalaureate degree. The experience shall be:

  • Obtained under the direct supervision of a Licensed Social Worker under the Clinical Social Work and Social Work Practice Act (formerly Social Workers Registration Act), diplomate in clinical social work, designated member of ACSW or other appropriate supervisor as approved by the Board.
  • Satisfactory as evaluated by the supervisor. The supervisor shall have met with the individual an average of at least 4 hours each month.

  • NON-EXAMINATION – LSW ONLY. An LSW seeking licensure under Illinois Public Act 102-0326 is not required to complete an examination. This licensure method does not apply to LCSW licensure.

  3. Proof that all fines, fees, courts costs, and restitution was paid in full, if any.
