Welcome to your new student orientation

You鈥檙e almost ready to start learning! Here鈥檚 what you need to know before diving into your classes.

Competency-based program checklist

To-do list before class

1.聽 聽聽Bookmark My爱污传媒

This is your student portal, so you鈥檒l want quick access to anytime, anywhere. Stay up-to-date on your coursework and important notifications here.

2.聽 聽聽Complete your new student orientation within My爱污传媒

Learn all about your online classroom with a guided in My爱污传媒. Allow 30-60 minutes to complete this step.

3.聽 聽聽Schedule your personalized onboarding appointment

Explore the essentials of going to school online in this 30-minute session with your onboarding representative. to navigate your online classroom, get help downloading Microsoft 365 for free, review online textbooks and more.

4.聽 聽聽Create a plan for success

To be successful in the competency-based program, you need to develop a strategy for how you鈥檒l progress in your classes, manage your time, set deadlines for your reflections and assessments, and learn at a pace that works for you. Create a that outlines how you鈥檒l complete the tasks (e.g., reflections and assessments) in each of your courses for the entire 16-week block. You can choose either the Written Plan or the Pacing Guide to complete your plan. If you need help, contact your Faculty Mentor or Academic Counselor, who can help make recommendations on how to personalize your plan to best benefit you.

5.聽 聽聽Set expectations

The Competency-based grading scale uses three grades: MA (mastered), ME (met) and NM (not met). It鈥檚 completely normal to see a grade of NM and have to resubmit an assessment. Don鈥檛 let that discourage you; you have three attempts to submit assessments and level up your grade (and your mastery of the material).

6.聽 聽聽View your schedule

Don鈥檛 worry about registering for class 鈥 we鈥檒l do that for you! Once you鈥檙e financially and academically cleared, you鈥檒l automatically be enrolled in your classes.聽Your courses will typically be available the week prior to the start of classes (Thursday or Friday), after which you can view your schedule in My爱污传媒 on your .

7.聽 聽聽Check in with your faculty mentor

Your mentor will help welcome you to 爱污传媒 and be available for support throughout your student journey. Schedule a time close to your start date to connect with your mentor, and continue to reach out for guidance any time as you navigate the path towards graduation!

Tips and resources

Tips for your first day

Make time for school

Expect to devote at least 15-20 hours per week to your education. That鈥檚 what it takes to be well-prepared.

Post early and often

Most successful students participate frequently.

Stay engaged in the classroom

Look for instructor feedback and use it to improve.

Have a dedicated place to study

It鈥檚 important to find a quiet place where you can read textbooks, complete assignments and participate in class discussions.

Become familiar with free, helpful resources

Writing support, math resources and more can be found on my.phoenix.edu.

Get help when you need it

From faculty members, classmates and alumni to counselors and a team of dedicated advisors 鈥斅爕ou have an entire community rallying behind you.

Look at your syllabus

Utilize it to improve, pay attention to participation and check for feedback from your instructor.

Stay on top of deadlines while you鈥檙e ahead.
